Eguavoen has come under criticism from fans following the Super Eagles defeat to Rwanda in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

The 2-1 loss saw the Super Eagles suffer their first defeat in the qualifying series but still led the table with eleven points.

However, they had already secured their qualification for the AFCON tournament, which will be held in Morocco.

Oliseh’s message to Nigerians

Oliseh has praised Eguavoen for stepping in to help the Super Eagles through their current situation and underlined that the team's problems are not his fault.

Speaking to News Central TV, the former Super Eagles coach said, “The situation we found ourselves [in], Eguavoen is not responsible at all.

“He is trying to salvage what has been there before he came. If you are Nigerian, the best you can do for your fatherland is to support the person in charge.

“If you like or you don’t like him, he is not representing his own family; he is representing you at home. So, give him the moral support.”
